The Northwest supports healthy populations of black bears. Our primary focus for the Black Bear Outreach Project is to promote safe coexistence among humans, pets, livestock and bears. Our main thrust is to educate neighborhoods and businesses, as well as campers, hikers, hunters and other recreationalists on safe food handling, storage and disposal. Our staff and volunteers give campground talks, distribute information at trail heads, attend and participate in sportsmen shows, and community fairs. We work with enforcement officers with wildlife departments to distribute “bear aware” door-hangers in neighborhoods where there have been bear-human conflicts, or the potential for them exists.
